I finally got around to watching the rest of the Oscars. I was out that night and only caught the big awards at the end. I had heard that there was finally a tribute to horror movies and I was anxious to see it. Now that I have seen it I have some complaints. First off why were Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart presenting this? I mean, really, are they today’s only answer to modern horror movies? I liked the movies, but they are pretty tame in the horror department. Why not have the queen of scream, Jamie Leigh Curtis or Mr. Nightmare himself Robert Englund? Heck, why not Bruce Campbell? I know they wanted to pull in the viewers by getting the Twilight kids, but use them for something else. There were much better choices for this presentation. My other big beef with this was the opening statement that the Oscars had not honored a horror movie since The Exorcist, 37 years ago. Really? What about the numerous awards that have been given out since to horror movies for visual effects, sound, makeup, costumes etc. Do these not count? Tell that to the winners. So, if these don’t count, what about all of the awards given to Silence of the Lambs? Best actor, actress, picture, director, screenplay were all awarded to that which is much more than what was awarded to The Exorcist. They only received awards for sound and screenplay. I guess you could argue that Silence of the Lambs was not a full on horror film, but the Academy included it in the montage, so that argument goes out the window. Putting all of that aside, I was thrilled to see the Academy giving horror movies their due. You can’t deny that the general public loves horror movies and it was about time that they paid homage to that.
Or not. These videos have been going around the internet in different forms for quite a while now. Someone sent this to me yesterday and I do hope they sent it because it was funny and not because they were scared by it. I get really irritated by these videos, but for some reason this one made me laugh and I really needed a laugh. I thought I would share it with you. Either it will scare you which obviously means you’re stupid or it’ll make you laugh which means we are of like minds. Either way be sure to watch the whole thing.
In honor of my sweet little black kitty, Agatha, who is passing away from kidney failure I thought I’d hunt down a black cat t-shirt. I always loved the Edgar Allan Poe story The Black Cat, but I am also a huge fan of The Black Cat (included in the Tales of Terror) movie with Vincent Price. Of course what happens to the cat in that story I do not wish for my girl. I found this great t-shirt based on The Black Cat story on a British site. I can’t seem to find it on this side of the pond, but I really like it and I might just order it. For those of you who can’t make out what the t-shirt reads, it’s a quote from the book: “I had walled the monster up within the tomb”/The Black Cat/Edgar Allan Poe. Very creepy, I must say.
OMG! A reader sent this short video to me today and I just had to post it immediately. It is so dark and disturbing yet amazingly well done. I’m not sure what else I can say about it, but you have to watch it. Beyond cool. Enjoy…or not.
“Luis is the 2nd short video of the series “Lucía, Luis y el lobo” (”Lucía, Luis and the Wolf”), it is a follow-up to the short video Lucía. The video was shot frame by frame with a digital photo camera. Materials: charcoal, dirt, flowers, found objects and cardboard.”
*Thanks The Beautiful Kind for sending this to me.
Being a book store owner I naturally love books as well as all things scary. When I come across something that brings two of my loves together I get very excited and my wallet begins to quiver with anticipation. Here is a book that I have already placed my order for called Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln’s Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities written by Amy Stewart. How could I not want this book? The title alone is worth it! I love to add odd and interesting books to my shelves at home. Though I do not have the book in my hot little hands yet, you can take a peak inside on the Amazon website. With titles like Deadly Dinner, Lawn of Death and The Devil’s Bartender the chapter’s names themselves are worth a read. Check out this cute little video the author did about the book.
Now that holiday shopping is in full swing I thought I’d pass on good gift ideas that I come across on my wanderings around the net. My big problem is always finding gifts for the stockings. Mainly because I firmly believe that all stocking stuffers should fit into the actual stocking. No laying it on the mantel next to the stocking for me! Keeping that in mind I found a great stocking stuffer for that zombie loving relative. I’m also hoping that since I’m posting about it Scary Hubby will get a clue and get me one. This is the Dismember-Me Plush Zombie. You can pull off both his arms, his legs, pull apart his body, remove his head and pull out his brain. Just think if you get a whole bunch of these you could make your own zombie movie! How funny would that be? Well, actually that’s exactly what ThinkGeek.com did with them. I swear I thought of it first, though.
Is there anyone alive, besides children, who have not seen the famous shower scene in Psycho? Scary shower scenes have been repeated over and over in movies, in television and even a music video from, you guessed it, the 80s. It was a song from the one hit wonder Rockwell called Somebody’s Watching Me. One of my favorites. Of course you know that the late great Micheal Jackson did the backup vocals for that song, right? Well, if you didn’t, now you do. Just call me Useless Tidbit Jane. Here’s another one for you: I saw an interview once with Janet Leigh from Psycho and she said she would never take a shower again after seeing that scene. It wasn’t doing the scene that scared her, it was watching it afterwards. Anyway, for $14.99 and $17.99 you can have your own Bloody Shower Curtain and Rug too. Make sure to put them in a guest bath and then invite a bunch of people you don’t know over for a party.
Back in the mid 80s a horror movie called April Fool’s Day came out. It was part of that string of movies in the 80s that made a slasher movie out of almost every holiday, though this one was unique. I loved it and over the years have seen it so many times I can almost recite it word for word. They even tried to do a remake last year that was a straight to DVD disaster. Flash forward to 2009 and I’m sitting watching Psych. This is one of my favorite shows right now. It’s not scary, it’s just really funny and I love the obscure 80s references. Anyway, as I was watching the episode called “Tuesday the 17th” I started recognizing lines. To my utter delight they were doing a spoof of April Fool’s Day with a little Friday the 13th thrown in. You have to check this out and if you haven’t seen the movie you should. It’s a lot of fun and doesn’t have the amount of gore that most of those movies have.
So, ever wonder what brought Jane to the Dark Side? Well, even if you didn’t I’m going to share anyway. It seems I have liked all things scary my whole life, but it really started when I was still little Jane. I believe the year was 1983. MTV was all the rage and I loved it. One day after school when I was watching MTV this amazing video came on called Don’t Pay The Ferryman by Chris De Burgh. I was transfixed. It was creepy, spooky and it didn’t hurt that the guy was cute. Hey it was the 80s give me a break. To my young eyes it was a world that I had never seen before and I wanted to be in it. I had loved Scooby Doo for years, and still do, but this was better. Now, unlike some of you, I have never been into the gorey side of life. Gorey is not scary to me. I like scary and this was it for me. Some might say that I am Goth. I think I was too early for that, at least what we know of as Goth today. The Goth culture started in the US in the early 80s, but it is not what we consider Goth to be now. I like scary better anyhow and I believe it all started with this video. So check it out.
