Scary iPad

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Office,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 4:08 pm

By now you should all have your iPads, right? Well, if you don’t then get your lazy butt off the sofa and buy one. If you can’t afford it then “borrow” one. I absolutely love mine and frequently change the covers on it according to my mood. There are so many cool covers and bags out there. I was sent the one pictured from a company called GelaSkins. This particular one was designed by Munk One a.k.a Jose A. Mercado and is called Murder Scene. Although I really love it, it doesn’t look like any murder scene I’ve ever seen. What’s with the birds? Did they try to poke her eyes out? Why is it that her hair seems to be made of birds? This is all just a little too reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Ever since I saw the movie years ago I have a fear of birds that appear in groups. I think the fact that the birds aren’t explained in the movie is why it bothers me so much. So, though I love this skin, I’m not sure of how long it will stay on my iPad, but they have many others.

Halloween Clearance

Filexd under: Accessories,Decor,Halloween Decor,Holidays — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:40 pm

Listen, I know it’s February, but if you’re anything like me Halloween is a year round holiday. What most people will only put out for Halloween, we have as our regular decor. I have found over the years that February is one of the best months for picking up scary stuff for my house. No one, except a few of us smart people, is thinking about Halloween this time of year. Everything that was left over from last year has been marked down to practically nothing. Most people would assume it’s just junk left, but I don’t find that to be true. A lot of times I see something I love in the fall, but decide to wait because it’s too pricey. Once Halloween is over the stores do a quick clearance and then the stuff disappears to make room for Christmas. After that’s over they do the quick clearance again. Nothing gets put up for January, so they haul out what’s left from Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas and slash the prices. By then no one is giving any thought to Halloween, so it keeps getting marked down until it’s gone. That’s when I swoop in for the kill. Most of the time that item I was coveting is now half the price or even less. The one thing about this, though, is that this mostly happens online. A few stores will put their clearance stuff in some hidden corner of the store. Most of the time, though, it’s only available on their sites because alot of the bigger stores have to send their stuff back to warehouses. Do a search on Google for Halloween Clearance and you’ll be surprised by the amount of listings. Anything from Target to BuyCostumes.com to the higher end things at Grandin Road.

Oddities

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Books,Collectibles,Decor,Furniture,Halloween Decor,Nature,Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:35 pm

Let’s face it, I am a little weird. Some would even say very weird. I collect unusual things, I dress weird and I decorate my house strangely. My favorite movie quote is, “I, myself, am strange and unusual.” Do you know what movie that’s from? It’s from Beetlejuice. Lydia says this when she is talking to the two ghostly inhabitants of her parent’s new house. I have always thought that it describes me perfectly. My extended family all find me rather odd and have never understood me. Once in a while I come across someone who is like minded and it helps me remember that there are many people out there like me. I have recently discovered a new show and it has quickly became my favorite. I’m actually surprised that it ever got on TV, considering it’s sometimes high ick factor. It’s called Oddities and it’s on the Discovery Science channel. It’s about an unusual antique store in New York called Obscura Antiques and Oddities. It follows the two owners as they deal with buying and selling strange old items. Anything from real skulls to old medical equipment to coffins. If it’s weird and old they probably have it or want to buy it. It’s a fascinating show and I highly recommend it to all of my strange and unusual friends.

Hollywood Is Dead

Filexd under: Art,Collectibles,Decor,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:51 am

You know I love movies, right? If you haven’t figured that out by now well… you’re just a dumbass. I came across a fantastic artist that combines my two loves of horror and movies. Read on if you want to find out more.

“A ghastly and infectious virus has spread through Los Angeles, home to the celebrated movie makers of the world. While seeming to send Hollywood greats to their grave, the dead have reanimated with a new hunger for flesh… and brains. Now the rotting corpses have performed a postmortem on tinsel town, and the cinematic icons will never be the same.” At least that’s what poster artist Matt Busch says when talking about his latest and greatest project. Matt takes famous movie posters and painstakingly recreates them with a scary edge called Hollywood is Dead. The project originally got started in 2009 when he was approached by Lucasfilm to create a poster that would combine Star Wars and zombies that would promote a new book on starwars.com called Death Troopers. The fans went crazy for it and since then he has started doing classic movie posters. He has done twenty so far and plans to publish a coffee table book one day. You can have your own 19×13 copy of any of them for $19.95. That will just have to do until he comes out with that book. You can see them all here. My personal fav is Breakfast is Tiffany.

One Hand in the Grave Boots

Filexd under: Apparel,Art,Fashion,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , , — jane @ 4:59 pm

I happened to come across some of the coolest and scariest shoes I have ever seen on a site called Iron Fist. They are actually a clothing company that has some great stuff, but their shoes are what really caught my eye. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like them. Even though One Hand in the Grave Boots (right) is a great name for them it’s not what I was thinking about when I saw them. They made me think of various movies where the hero/heroin is going up/down an open staircase and the bad guy reaches through and grabs their ankles. This was a major fear of mine growing up, so that could be why. Check out all of their funky zombie and skull shoes. They are just so cool and they’re vegan. These boots can be purchased for $55 from Amazon. Their other shoes run anywhere from $15 to $80, so they are very affordable.

Creepy Wrapping Paper

Filexd under: Art,Arts/Crafts,Crafts,Halloween Decor,Holidays,Misc.,Office,stationary — Tags: , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 6:25 pm

I know you guys will read this and start complaining that Christmas is over, but this little project can be adapted for any holiday, so just shut up and read. On Christmas Day a reader named Sara sent me an email with a picture attached. The picture was of a pile of gifts that had been wrapped in the coolest creepy wrapping paper I have ever seen. I then found out her husband actually hand made it. Apparently Sara is a huge fan of the presents in the Haunted Mansion when it’s all done up for the holidays like The Nightmare Before Christmas. Ryan, her husband, took it upon himself to try and recreate the feeling and what you see at the right is the beautiful paper he came up with. All he did was buy some plain blood red wrapping paper and then draw webs on it with a black Sharpie. Tie it up with some black ribbon and you have an all occasion wrapping paper. How cheap and easy is that? I realize not everyone is an artist, but if you search around online there are many drawings available to inspire you and copy. If, however, you are as lazy as I have always suspected you are, you can click here and see a great example. Now you have no excuse to keep bugging me about the lack of good paper out there. You can just make it yourself!

*Thank you so much to Ryan Bray for creating this and Sara Bray for sharing it!

Zombie Felties

Filexd under: Arts/Crafts,Books,Collectibles,Crafts,Halloween Decor,Holidays — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 10:42 pm

Anyone who knows me or has spent any time reading my blog can attest to my zombie obsession. I’m not sure where or when it started. Could be when movies like Shaun of the Dead and Fido started getting released. Before that I had very little interest. I’ve never been a fan of the George Romero type zombie movies. They were just gross and didn’t scare me. If a movie doesn’t make me laugh or scared I’m just not interested. When they finally started having fun with zombies I think I became obsessed. Since some of my readers are aware of my feelings I frequently get attacked by emails with zombie links. A reader tipped me off about a book called “Zombie Felties“. This book will show you how to raise (make) 16 gruesome felt creatures from the undead. They are more cute than gruesome, but who cares? I think I’d make them magnets or something like that since they are pretty small. So, come on, get your zombie on and make a couple of these. It may be too late for stocking stuffers, but they’d make great party gifts! Of course, if you’re not too crafty or just lazy it may just take you until next Christmas to make them anyway.

Casket Cuff Links

Filexd under: Accessories,Apparel,Fashion,Jewelry,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:25 pm

Casket Cuff LinksI love Halloween parties. Everything about them. From the planning to the decorating to the cooking. Unfortunately there is one thing that I don’t enjoy about the average Halloween party and that’s the costumes. Before you judge me and bite my head off in a fit of rage, let me explain.I have said it before and I will say it again. I don’t like funny costumes. Halloween is about scary stuff, not funny stuff. Save the jokes for April Fool’s Day. I’ve tried many times to tell people only to wear scary costumes and you’d think with my friends that would be easy. Unfortunately, no. It’s not even the actual costumes that bug me, it’s the randomness of it. I have always wanted a party like the one in the first Addams Family movie or even just a good scary theme would make me happy. Victorian dead people, classic horror movie characters, zombies or even just the weirdest scary thing that you could come up with. Victorian dead people is probably my favorite though and these Casket Cuff links would be perfect. Can’t you just picture a guy in a rotted out tuxedo with tails, a spider infested top hat, some makeup and these fantastic Casket Cuff Links? Actually I think I’ve seen some movie at some time where a guy dresses up like that for a Halloween party, but I can’t remember what it was. Oh well, he sounds like my dream date.

undeadWe

Filexd under: Apparel,Fashion,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 3:56 pm

undeadWe T-ShirtI was directed, by a reader, to this great t-shirt company called Chop Shop. They have some very fun and original designs, but the undeadWe is my favorite. Here’s a blurb from the page about it.

“We just put the final nail in the coffin of our Horror/Fantasy collection with our newest offering undeadWe; it packs in 51 zombies, ghosts, mummies, spirits and other boo-tiful members of the living dead. References range from television, film, video games, popular music, animation, literature, legend and another one from the breakfast table.”

If you want to see if you can figure out what each one is, check out their higher resolution version here. Don’t scroll down on the page or you’ll see the answers. I had so much fun trying to figure them all out. Unfortunately there were some I could not. So ladies if you don’t want everyone staring at your chest for long periods of time then don’t wear this shirt. If you do, then go ahead and stick those babies out. Just remember it may not be your assets the guys are looking at.

Screaming Mask

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Decor,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 12:16 pm

mask2Technically this piece is actually called Yawning Mask. When I saw it for the first time I didn’t think he was yawning at all. It looks more like a ghost or something screaming. It totally creeped me out and therefore earned a spot on my blog. I actually found this in a Signals catalog, which surprised me. Once in a while they have an odd piece in there, but this one was just too creepy to pass up. Maybe it’s the way it’s photographed that creeps me out. There’s just this emptiness behind it that makes it appear soulless. Is that a word? Anyway, I can’t imagine anyone but someone like me wanting this in their house and I’m not even sure about me. It’s beautifully hand carved in Indonesia from Hibiscus wood. It appears to be very smooth. It states in the description, “Don’t be surprised if you have the sudden urge to yawn.” Really?! So far, I have not yawned even once looking at it. They also describe it as being humorous and serene. I’m not sure about that. It actually reminds me of the mask from Scream to be honest and they aren’t exactly serene movies, though they are humorous. What do you think? Does it scare you or make you yawn?
