When I was in college long ago I was always looking for ways to scare up my dorm room, much to my roommate’s dismay. I’m afraid I was somewhat gloomy in my decor choices which did not make for a fast friendship with the cheerleader I shared a room with. It seems I was quite difficult back then. Over time we came to accept one another’s differences and became friends and have remained so. One thing I did that drove her completely batty was that I was always putting black filmy scarves over my lamp shades to make it gloomier in the room. She of course would complain that she couldn’t see when she came in and take them off. If I had had some of these creepy cool Skull Lamp Shade Covers back in those days I would have been so happy and she would have been even more mad. She didn’t take kindly to my skull collection either. I guess I was always trying to piss her off in those days.

I have found a new artist/designer that I am absolutely in love with. Her name is Georgina Brett Chinnery and the name of her company is Bombarock. Of course, as usual, the company is based in the UK where I am convinced all of the people with good taste or at least scary taste live. Ms. Chinnery started the company in 2006 as an upholstery and design business. Although now she mainly works in leather pieces she has some amazing fabric pieces that are just to die for. Bombarock produces anything from chairs to ironing board covers to aprons. Hard to narrow down what is my favorite, but the Bat Apron and the Skull Chair rank pretty high up there. I just love a designer that has some real style and originality.

So, there is a woman in France that designs lamp shades and calls them Spooky Shades. Elisa refers to herself as a rock n’ roll/metal fan who was frustrated with the lack of interesting and funky housewares available in stores. She particularly didn’t like all of the plain lamp shades out there, so decided to make her own edgy ones. What Elisa has come up with is just fantastic. I’m not neccessarily a metal fan, but there are a lot of common design elements between that and my preferred scary lifestyle. There are ones based on horror movies, skulls and even one with anatomy sketches over a Jack the Ripper letter which I might add is my personal favorite. Each one appears to be different and one of kind and she updates often with new styles. If you don’t see one you like now, keep checking back because her stock changes often.
In our new house I am not so happy with the lighting. We have slowly been replacing the lights as we find more funky and interesting ones. I have a large island in my kitchen where two very plain pendant lights hang over it. As I was looking around online I found the most perfect lighting ever! It is called a Sunset Pendant, though I have no idea why. Why not call it a Bat Pendant? I mean it does feature a very large bat on it! No reason to be logical I guess. You certainly wouldn’t want it to be easily found by the bat loving public such as myself would you? Anyway, they are so deliciously creepy that I went to click on ordering a pair and got the shock of my life! These amazingly cool light fixtures cost a whopping $1898.00 each! What the hell are they made of? I still covet them though. I wonder if I could talk Scary Hubby into spending that much. Probably not, but maybe just one for our entryway would do? Well, I’m off to grovel and beg…
While I was covering all of the goodies during the month of October I found lots of cool things online to post about. Unfortunately, I had to save them until October was done. Now that November is in full swing I can let loose. First off we have the Blood Powered Lamp. Yup, that’s what I said. A lamp powered by your own blood. Well, you could use anyone’s blood actually, if you have some lying around. What a ghoulish idea, right? I’d like to think it was a spooky idea that some vampire had, but unfortunately no. Mike Thompson, an English designer from The Netherlands had a completely different purpose in mind. “What if, every time you wanted to switch on a light, you had to bleed? Would you think twice before illuminating the room, and in turn, using up energy?” In other words would we think differently about using up energy if it cost us something valuable each time. Interesting idea, huh? The lamp contains luminol. Luminol is the chemical forensic scientists use to check for traces of blood at a crime scene. Luminol reacts with the iron in blood and creates a bright blue glow. To use the lamp, you have to break the glass, cut yourself, and drip blood into the opening along with some activating powder. Unfortunately, each lamp can only be used once. Might make you rethink how much energy you use. Unless, of course, you have a supply of extra blood collected from your victims lying around.
While poking around in one of the cute little shops that I frequent I found this creepy little Pierced Metal Lantern. Well, okay so it wasn’t a quaint little shop with one of a kind items. It was Cost Plus World Market. But they have great stuff even if it is a national chain. Those one of a kind items tend to be expensive anyway. If you don’t have one of these stores in your city you are completely missing out. Luckily they do sell online. This lantern actually reminds me of the thurible thing that priests swing around in church carrying incense. It just has a creepyness to it that I like. I’m picturing it in a corner against very darkly painted walls like navy blue, purple or even a deep red. Come to think of it I think it would look really good in the corner of my guest bath where the walls are painted a deep blue. The light patterns would be fantastic. I have a thing for light patterns because they create spooky images and shadows. It’s all about ambiance people and this will give it to you.
I found this fantastic metal cutout table lamp and I must have it. It would look great sitting on top of my coffin shaped piano…if I had one…which I don’t, but according to the guy I did a post on yesterday might be possible. It feels very Victorian and creepy which reminds me of a movie from 1944 called Gaslight with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. This lamp would have fit in perfectly on the set. I know, another movie reference. Too bad! At least this isn’t from the 80s. I watch a lot of movies, especially old ones and I get great ideas from them. Can you imagine how trippy the shadows on the wall would be? They even have a hanging version! I’m throwing down the $79 even if I don’t have my coffin shaped piano yet.
