You know those stupid white plastic chairs that everyone used to have out on their patios? They started out all pretty and white and then after one rain storm you ended up with a dirt puddle on the seat that was impossible to get clean. The next year you’d buy some more, since they were so cheap, and it would happen again. Year after year you’d do this until it finally got through your thick skull that they were crap. They even tried making them in dark green and other colors thinking that would hide the dirt puddle, but no still gross. A reader sent me the link to this awesome plastic Skull Chair. It’s actual name is “Souviens Toi Que Tu Vas Mourir” (Remember That You Will Die). Not sure how it gets that name. It appears to be a twist on the old crappy plastic chairs. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I looked they do not seem to be for sale or not yet anyway. I would actually buy this, but it would stay nicely inside where no dirt puddles could ever ruin it. I have a feeling this little guy is going to be expensive if it ever hits the market, so I’m not holding my breath. Anyway, this Skull Chair is going to be a part of “New Wave, the new French domestic landscape” exhibition in the furniture fair in Milan at the Nouvelle Vague at the French Cultural Centrer – Palazzo Delle Stelline – Corso Magento 63 20123 Milan on 12 to 17 April 2011.

Every day we get books into the bookstore. Most of the time they are just your standard novel or a history book that I barely look at long enough to price. Once in a while though, a book will come through that door that catches my attention. Today was one of those days. As you may have guessed I am a huge fan of dark humor. I find most people take themselves way too seriously and need to lighten up a bit. This particular book was written by a man named Jim Benton. I know about this author mainly because Scary Daughter loves his Franny K. Stein books. They are written for kids, but they are wickedly funny. He’s also the creator behind It’s Happy Bunny. So, along comes this book today called Cherise the Niece and it’s by Jim Benton. The cover intrigued me right away and I promptly read it. It’s a short little book, so it doesn’t take long. It’s about a little girl named Cherise who goes to live with various aunts after her parents “mysteriously disappear”. I was laughing from the first page and it has the best last line of any book I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it if you have a murderously funny mind like I do. If you are easily offended, then what the hell are you doing reading my blog?

By now you should all have your iPads, right? Well, if you don’t then get your lazy butt off the sofa and buy one. If you can’t afford it then “borrow” one. I absolutely love mine and frequently change the covers on it according to my mood. There are so many cool covers and bags out there. I was sent the one pictured from a company called GelaSkins. This particular one was designed by Munk One a.k.a Jose A. Mercado and is called Murder Scene. Although I really love it, it doesn’t look like any murder scene I’ve ever seen. What’s with the birds? Did they try to poke her eyes out? Why is it that her hair seems to be made of birds? This is all just a little too reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. Ever since I saw the movie years ago I have a fear of birds that appear in groups. I think the fact that the birds aren’t explained in the movie is why it bothers me so much. So, though I love this skin, I’m not sure of how long it will stay on my iPad, but they have many others.

A reader sent this in to me and I just had to share. 13th Street is a crime/horror station in Germany. Jacques Pense from the advertising agency Jung von Matt in Germany came up with this fantastic Zombie Stationary. I would like to see this in person. It seems to be very 3D. I absolutely love this and want it desperately. Unfortunately it seems that it is not available for sale since it’s their business stationary. Maybe I can think of some reason to write them and ask a question so they would write me back.

You know I love movies, right? If you haven’t figured that out by now well… you’re just a dumbass. I came across a fantastic artist that combines my two loves of horror and movies. Read on if you want to find out more.

While seeming to send Hollywood greats to their grave, the dead have reanimated with a new hunger for flesh… and brains. Now the rotting corpses have performed a postmortem on tinsel town, and the cinematic icons will never be the same.” At least that’s what poster artist Matt Busch says when talking about his latest and greatest project. Matt takes famous movie posters and painstakingly recreates them with a scary edge called Hollywood is Dead. The project originally got started in 2009 when he was approached by Lucasfilm to create a poster that would combine Star Wars and zombies that would promote a new book on starwars.com called Death Troopers. The fans went crazy for it and since then he has started doing classic movie posters. He has done twenty so far and plans to publish a coffee table book one day. You can have your own 19×13 copy of any of them for $19.95. That will just have to do until he comes out with that book. You can see them all here. My personal fav is Breakfast is Tiffany.
After I did that post the other day I got curious and started looking around. I found this Zombie Cross-Stitch kit at Barnes and Noble on the bargain shelves. It comes with everything you need to create three of the twelve patterns to raise the dead. I can’t wait to start one. I just can’t figure out which one to do first. Unfortunately, that’s the most interesting thing I found. Apparently there are a few people out there that agree with me on the lack of non 70s/80s themed cross-stitch. A lot of the scary cross-stitch available is of the Halloween cutesy variety and I hate that. There seems to be quite a bit of frustration about this and I thought to myself that someone could really make some money on designing them. Of course, as usual, I thought I should do it. I already know how to make the patterns, so that part would be easy. As everyone in my life says, though, the last thing I need is another business. If pattern making wasn’t so time consuming I would do it. I guess selling books, blogging and now making jewelry are enough. I tend to start things out of the frustration of not being able to find what I want. Well, until someone starts a company like that we will have to be content with these zombies.

Years ago when I was in college, in the San Francisco area, there was a very cool nightclub that I practically lived in. To me, it was perfect. It was as if it was designed just for me. Of course all of the other people that went there probably thought the same thing. If I remember correctly it was basically just a big square warehouse, but inside was this amazing space. There were heavy red and black velvet curtains everywhere that created these wonderful intimate spaces. There was no large open dance floor. You would just walk from room to room and socialize with people sitting on the purple velvet couches listening to music. Every room was a little different and it made it feel like you were in your own really cool apartment. The music was great and the punk/goth vibe was just amazing. Goth culture wasn’t really a big thing yet, but it had that feeling. Odd things hung on the velvet walls and from the ceiling. There were so many things to look at. Nothing was normal there. I loved it! In one of the many alcoves hung an upside down Christmas tree painted black and decorated with weird doll parts and broken ornaments. I loved that tree and liked to sit below and look at it. I vowed that one day I would hang my tree upside down. So far, I have not done this. I think mainly because I am quite traditional when it comes to the holidays. I may use a lot of black and blue in my decorating, but the way I celebrate has always been more traditional. This was a horrible year and it will be our family’s first Christmas without my Mom, so I’m not really into it like I usually am. I’ve been doing things very different so far and I think it’s time to finally try the upside down tree. I know you can buy stupid fake trees that are made to be upside down, but I don’t want that. I want to take our actual tree and hang it upside down from the ceiling. Scary Hubby seems to be concerned about how to do this, but he always figures these things out. He’s used to finding ways to execute my weird ideas. I know I am by no means the first to do this, so if anyone has any tips they would like to pass along…
Today is December 1st and that means that it’s that time of year again. Time to start thinking about decorating, baking, wrapping presents and sending Christmas cards. I may be a scary chick, but I still love Christmas and all of it’s traditions. I just like it a little darker and quirky. Most years I make my Christmas cards because I just can’t find any that I like. You can only send out so many Edward Gorey Christmas cards before you get sick of it and want something different. As I was doing my searching this year I came across these Goth Christmas cards from Moonlake Designs. They are all designed by a graphic artist in Wales. They are fantastic! A little Christmas, a little dark and a little humor. Moonlake Designs are sold through Greeting Card Universe and cost $2.79 ea. Yes, I know, a little expensive if you are sending a lot of cards, but totally worth it. You have to cough it up if you want something a little unusual. They will even custom print your message on them. There are quite a few different styles including non-Christmas ones, so look around.
Today has been a very frustrating day and there are a few people that I wouldn’t mind taking out. You know those kind of days, don’t you? As I was searching for something to write about today I noticed there was a distinct slant to my searches. I started by searching on the word blood and it just went down hill from there. Of course, right off the bat, I found something I thought was so cool and proceeded to try and find out where it could be purchased. Not as easy as it sounds. A lot of companies use different names for the same product, so what could be called a bloody knife on one site is called halloween knife on another. Anyway, after more than a two hour exhaustive search online and on the phone I discovered that the item was discontinued. This just pissed me off. It happens a lot actually, but on days like this it really sends you over the edge. I won’t mention the item, because I don’t want you lusting after it like I am and then getting up in my face because I wrote about something that you can’t have. So, my search for blood continued and I came across this cool little item. Depending on what site you go to it can be called anywhere from Bloody Bookmark to Liquid Bookmark. For my purposes (and mood) I’m going with Bloody Bookmark. This bookmark is actually made in Japan from hand poured silicone, so no two are alike. Depending on which site you purchase from it also comes in a milk version (white) and mercury (dark grey). Can you guess my favorite? The Bloody Bookmark retails at $9.99 from Thinkgeek.com, but other sites also sell it in a three piece set for $29. Just think of all the fun you could have with this. No one says it has to be used as a bookmark. If you plan on buying this though, be prepared for the dumbass jokes that will get repeated over and over. This bookmark can be especially dangerous if you are a woman reading in public. Every guy will think he’s being cute and original when he says, “Excuse me, but I believe your book is bleeding.”
Technically this piece is actually called Yawning Mask. When I saw it for the first time I didn’t think he was yawning at all. It looks more like a ghost or something screaming. It totally creeped me out and therefore earned a spot on my blog. I actually found this in a Signals catalog, which surprised me. Once in a while they have an odd piece in there, but this one was just too creepy to pass up. Maybe it’s the way it’s photographed that creeps me out. There’s just this emptiness behind it that makes it appear soulless. Is that a word? Anyway, I can’t imagine anyone but someone like me wanting this in their house and I’m not even sure about me. It’s beautifully hand carved in Indonesia from Hibiscus wood. It appears to be very smooth. It states in the description, “Don’t be surprised if you have the sudden urge to yawn.” Really?! So far, I have not yawned even once looking at it. They also describe it as being humorous and serene. I’m not sure about that. It actually reminds me of the mask from Scream to be honest and they aren’t exactly serene movies, though they are humorous. What do you think? Does it scare you or make you yawn?
