Once in a while I wander through the bargain books area at Barnes and Noble looking for anything fun and unusual. This time I found the book Dracula’s Heir by Sam Stall. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I am very intrigued. It has all sorts of little envelopes to open inside. Apparently it’s an Interactive Mystery, so there are clues to help you solve some murders that happened 10 years after the events in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Not sure how interactive it can be since I didn’t exist in 1907, which is when this book takes place, but that’s maybe just me be being picky.
Found this link about the Ouija Board through the Fright Catalog website and just knew I had to share it with you guys. I love Ouija Boards. Not because I believe in it, but because of the artwork that you can find on them. Especially the older ones. Go ahead and read this. It’s interesting reading and gives you a little background on it’s history. While you’re at it check out the Fright Catalog website. If you have never visited them before you’re in for a treat. They have great Halloween props.
I love my iPhone, I really do, but I’m not the ideal user. I rarely download apps. Scary Hubby will tell me about something that I just have to have and usually I download it and then get bored with it. I will admit that I have a healthy obsession with Solitaire, especially Pyramid Solitaire. I do use those apps quite frequently. A while back Scary Hubby emailed me a link for yet another app. This sat in my inbox for the last month not getting touched. I finally opened it up this afternoon to see what it was. Big mistake. I can’t stop playing this game! It’s called Grimm: Ride of the Perambulator and it’s incredibly addictive. Basically you play a lost baby in a carriage and you have to maneuver it through darkly gothic victorian worlds where Mr. Grimm and other scary men are trying to stop you and kill you. It’s kind of like Super Mario, but with a baby in a gothic world. The graphics are just gorgeous. Think Tim Burton with a dash of Gorey. I wish they made it for the iPad, because I would love to see that artwork on a larger scale. You can download it here. It’ll cost you $0.99, but it’s worth it. Just make sure you read the device requirements and that yours is completely up to date.
I absolutely love pictures like this. You glance at it and it’s one thing. You look closer and it’s something else entirely. So cool and this one’s creepy too!
Last night Scary Hubby and I had a few friends over for game night. One of my good friends (now best friend) decided to bring me a bottle of wine she happened to come across that she knew I’d like. We have a great bunch of friends. They know what I like, so anything remotely scary is brought to the Scary Jane alter to be oo’d and ah’d over. Well, this time they struck gold. This is a wine from Australia called Killibinbin. They make quite a few different wines, but I received the Scaredy Cat Cabernet Malbec. What makes these wines so great, you ask impatiently? Well, my little pain in the ass, besides being fun to say they have really cool labels. They look like the old pulp mystery novel covers they had back in the day. This of course brings together three of my favorite things. Wine, books and scary stuff. I haven’t tried the wine yet, because the bottle is so neat, but I can imagine that I’ll love it no matter what just because of the presentation. I’m easy that way.
I come from a long line of game lovers. I grew up playing games with my family and friends and still do. We host game nights with our friends and every Sunday afternoon is game time in our house. One that we play regularly is the award winning game Fluxx. It’s a fun card game that’s easy to play anywhere since there is no board or money involved. I recently found out that there is a Zombie Fluxx version. How cool is that? I can’t believe we’ve been playing all this time and never knew. I have yet to get it, but I’m very curious about it and how the zombie theme changes the game. I would try to explain the game to you, but the goal and the rules of the game changes all the time and it’s one of those games you just have to jump in and play. From what I can understand there are weapons to kill the zombies with and your friends can become zombies. If anyone out there has played it email me or comment on this post and let me know what you think and if it’s worth getting.
Apparently I’ve been out of the loop on card games or should I say card decks. I’ve been playing with the same damn set of cards for the last 10 years. I had no idea that Bicycle offers all sorts of great theme card decks. As I was poking around on Amazon the other day I came across the Guardians deck. Totally cool, so I started looking around some more and OMG! so many neat sets. I was drooling. Literally. It always makes me so happy to see big companies do things with their products that are a little outside of the box. Some innovative person within their company thought that just making the same card deck in blue or red wasn’t enough. Why not branch out and make themed sets that will get people to buy even more sets of cards. I mean I know they were thinking how can we make more money. People play with the same cards forever, like me. I can’t fault them for wanting to make more money. Don’t we all? I just mean that they set out to see what people wanted. There are bunches of us ”weirdos” out there and it’s nice to see them catering to us once in awhile too. We don’t all shop at J Crew. Anyway, got carried away. I was just going to point out my favorite of all of their special sets, which is the Black Ghost deck or maybe the Karnival Midnight is my favorite. They also make the Tragic Royalty deck, Karnival Assassin, Black Spider, Shadow Masters and many others that aren’t necessarily creepy just really cool. If only there was a vampire and a zombie deck then it would be perfect. Now go throw away that crappy deck you’ve been using for years and get yourself one of these creepy suckers.
Do you have that family member that kinda gets on your nerves? The one you dread seeing every year, but you still have to buy a gift for. Well here’s the perfect gift. A Voodooz Doll! There are four different dolls available: Ezili, Uchawi, Baka and Kennis. Each little voodoo doll has an articulated internal skeleton and is approximately 10″ tall. It comes with voodoo pins, mojo bones, binding twine, a chicken foot and a journal. These are extremely popular little dolls and only a limited number were made. They can be hard to find. If they are no longer available at the above link look around on the internet. I have found them regularly on ebay. Just make sure you stick the pins in and curse it before you give it to them or they could use it on you!
Everybody loves games, right? Well, I don’t really care if you do or not. The important thing is I do. Actually my whole family is game crazy. Here is a website called Halloween Arcade. It satisfies my need for a fun little spooky game during the day when I need a break from work. They have been kind enough to link to us since the beginning, so I figure it’s time to give them a plug too. I have played all of them many times, but my favorite is probably Coffin Creep or Undertaker. Be sure to check out The Pumpkin-Left-Me-Blues. This always makes me crack up.
