I have long had a fascination with disembodied hands. They have always delighted me, but creeped me out at the same time. Many other disembodied hands have been covered on my blog such as Hand Soap, Baby Soap Hands, Spooky Wall Hands and Hand Hooks. I have one room in my house that is reserved for my hand fascination and all of my disembodied hands are sent there. I must admit it is a very creepy room, but it makes me happy. I often find my hands in antique and junk stores, but once in a while I find them brand new like this Buddhist Hand from Z Gallerie. They often surprise me with some of their offerings. My only problem would be the price. I’m not sure I want to spend $99.95 on a hand, when I already have two attached to my body and a room full of them. Maybe I’ll get lucky and find it at some garage sale in a few years when the sucker that bought it has decided it’s not hip anymore. Come to think of it, I’m not sure how this love of hands came to be. Maybe it’s the whole obsession I had with Thing from the Addams Family when I was a kid. I still want a live one, so I buy things like this Buddhist Hand hoping that all of the disembodied hands in my house will eventually pull a Toy Story and come to life. I can dream can’t I?

As I have stated before I am not really a wallpaper fan. I do come across ones that I like now and then, but when I think of trying to remove it one day, when I get tired of it, I come to my senses. There is one thing I’m sure of though, I will never want to put bug wallpaper on my walls. This wallpaper, called Ms. Ward, is actually very cool looking, but I know I would start feeling the creepy crawlies every time I looked at it. I like scary, but not creepy crawlies. This was designed by Katie Deedy of Grow House Grow and part of the Naturalist Collection which features long forgotten women of science. Mary Ward (1827-1869), the inspiration for this pattern, was a renowned entomologist. Each wallpaper design has a neat little story attached to it and all of them are worth checking out. Many different papers are in the series, but the one I find incredibly fascinating is the paper called Aleister. That one is based on Ka Cox and her bizarre run-in with the infamous Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) in Cornwall during the summer of 1938 when she mysteriously passed away. Anything attached to “the wickedest man in the world” is usually worth a read.

I am not normally a fan of glass tables. I find them to be too contemporary for my taste and a pain in the ass to clean. Once in a while though, I find a table like this Spider Table that changes my mind and makes me rethink my personal style. I think this table is deliciously creepy. I’ve been obsessed with spiders lately, so I keep searching them out online. I think this might just creep me out too much to have it in my house, but it’s still totally cool. I think it would make me have nightmares about giant spiders chasing me like in those old movies. This particular table was designed by Judy Kensley McKie and is made from steel and glass. Unfortunately it is a one of kind, so don’t get too attached.

I, like many women, love hats. I obsessively buy them thinking I will look fabulous in them and then often times don’t have a place to wear them. The fancier the better. Let’s face it though. How many places can you wear an elaborate hat to? I have now found this fantastically creepy Spider Hat that I just have to buy. Unfortunately it’s $145, so it will take a little convincing to get Scary Hubby to agree that I need it. Luckily he loves when I wear a hat, so it shouldn’t be too hard. Plus, all of my hats look really good displayed in our house. So if I never find a day to wear it besides Halloween I can say it’s just part of the house decor.
I saw these a long time ago and was so disturbed by them that I put them in my blog book to be posted later. Yesterday I received an email from a friend and something she said reminded me of these little guys and made me decide it was time. Don’t ask. Anyway, these little hand painted porcelain guys are actually called Little Joseph Candle Holders and were designed by czech designer Maxim Velcovsky for the Qubus Design Studio. They don’t come cheap at $100 each, but they do have a very high creepy factor. What I’d like to know is why designers seem so obsessed with baby body parts like these Baby Soap Hands that I also covered a while back. I just don’t know how I feel about hot wax dripping all over these baby heads. I find this to be just too weird.
Found the coolest Cuckoo Clock ever! If you loved Stanley Kubrick”s The Shining, you will love this Shining Cuckoo Clock. If you are actually more of a fan of the later TV version, then you won’t like this and should probably hang your head in shame and go away. Every hour Jack breaks through the door and says, “Here’s Johnny” followed by Wendy’s scream. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to that sound every hour during the night? I think I’d get tired of that after a while, but as an alarm clock it would be totally cool. This clock was designed by Chris Dimino. Unfortunately there was just one made, so not much chance of getting my hands on one.
If you don’t know by now, I love skulls. I love anything with skulls on it, but apparently even I have my limits. I came across this Skull Radio and thought to myself that some things are just better left without a skull. This little plastic radio has a sound-activated skull that wags his jaw along to your favorite station and has light-up eyes. According to the website the push-button settings are “fun to use”. Really? I sincerely doubt that. I’ve never come across push-buttons that are anything more than functional. I don’t know. This just looks cheap and stupid to me. Not everything requires a skull perched on top of it. As a joke gift maybe, but that’s about it. Might explain why it’s marked down to $8.98 from $19.95. If you love it and can’t live without it wait a little longer and I’m sure the price will go down even more.
When I was in college long ago I was always looking for ways to scare up my dorm room, much to my roommate’s dismay. I’m afraid I was somewhat gloomy in my decor choices which did not make for a fast friendship with the cheerleader I shared a room with. It seems I was quite difficult back then. Over time we came to accept one another’s differences and became friends and have remained so. One thing I did that drove her completely batty was that I was always putting black filmy scarves over my lamp shades to make it gloomier in the room. She of course would complain that she couldn’t see when she came in and take them off. If I had had some of these creepy cool Skull Lamp Shade Covers back in those days I would have been so happy and she would have been even more mad. She didn’t take kindly to my skull collection either. I guess I was always trying to piss her off in those days.
I came across this very badass chair called The Outlaw the other day. It was designed by Ted Nemeth. The chair “…is a classic Victorian chair that’s hand carved from solid mahogany the painted satin black and embossed with jewels, tooled leather and working speakers in the footstool.” Not sure where to start. There are just so many things to say about this chair. As a former interior designer I still get very excited about furniture. I also get very irritated when someone says they painted solid mahogany. That’s neither here nor there though. Just an aside really. This chair has the words F*** O** tooled in on the seat with a black skull sitting at the top of the back. It certainly is a badass chair and I think only badass people should own it. It’s very cool, but might just be a little too scary for my house. Or should I say weird. The thing that bugs me the most is the speakers in the footstool. Really? Is that necessary? How do they attach to your stereo? Will you have cords running from it or is it wireless? Why on the footstool anyway? Your feet will be pumping with the music. Wouldn’t that affect the sound? I don’t know. Strange choice if you ask me, which no one did or I would have given them an earful!

I have found a new artist/designer that I am absolutely in love with. Her name is Georgina Brett Chinnery and the name of her company is Bombarock. Of course, as usual, the company is based in the UK where I am convinced all of the people with good taste or at least scary taste live. Ms. Chinnery started the company in 2006 as an upholstery and design business. Although now she mainly works in leather pieces she has some amazing fabric pieces that are just to die for. Bombarock produces anything from chairs to ironing board covers to aprons. Hard to narrow down what is my favorite, but the Bat Apron and the Skull Chair rank pretty high up there. I just love a designer that has some real style and originality.
