Eerie Origami

Filexd under: Animals,Art,Arts/Crafts,Books,Crafts,Halloween Decor,Misc.,Toys/Games — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:10 am

Stopped into Barnes and Noble today to see if they had put their scary stuff out yet. They had put some out, but it looked like they were still in the process. I stopped into the bargain isles and found this little Eerie Origami kit. I’m not a particular fan of origami. It’s not that I don’t think it’s cute, I just find it irritating and kind of a waste. Let me explain. First of all I have absolutely no patience for it. I have tried and tried to do it, but it rarely comes out right. I learned how to make a ball when I was just tiny Scary Jane and I can still do that. I pull that one out anytime I feel the need to impress someone with my folding skills. My aunt always and I do mean always would make an origami thing out of her napkin. I’m not sure what it was. It looked like a boat, but also looked like a flower. A long time ago I was very determined to make an origami flower. It took me forever. I don’t think the instructions are ever very clear. I finally finished it and was quite proud until seconds later my new kitten at the time (that’s Lucy, who just passed away… for the people who actually read my posts) grabbed it off the table and ran. I was finally able to save it from her only to find that in less than a minute she had destroyed it. That’s what I mean by a waste. In other words a f***ing waste of time. This origami kit looks really cute, but I have way better things to do with my time then sitting around folding paper. I still have the origami ball that I can pull out anytime and that’s enough for me.

Horrorscopes

Filexd under: Books,Fairy Tales,News/Articles,Office — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:28 pm

I’ve never been much of a believer in fortune telling, horoscopes etc., but I do find it fun. In college I became obsessed with tarot cards and learning how to read them. Strangely it was not because I wanted to really tell people their fortunes. I just wanted to know how to do it and what the cards supposedly meant. Now I look at it as a fun parlor trick that I pull out for our Halloween parties. I have a fantastic outfit that I wear and everyone seems to love it. I, of course, go way overboard and predict all sorts of weird things. What’s funny is when one thing I predicted actually happens. I just came back from a little vacation to visit Scary Hubby’s family in Philly and as usual we went to lots of bookstores. You know I have to check out the competition. Anyway, we ended up in Barnes and Noble and as I was looking through the bargain books I found this little book called Horrorscopes: A Little Book of Misfortunes. I didn’t have time to look at it, but it had a skull on the cover so I went ahead and bought it thinking it would give me something to read on the plane. This little book is just so fun. It has a twisted horoscope for every day of the year. The book is not for any particular year, so it even has Feb. 29th. The horoscopes can range anywhere from predicting a zombie apocalypse to preparing for impending horrors like your transformation into an ogre. It also lists dark days, unlucky numbers, evil omens and gruesome gift ideas. Such a riot. I highly recommend this book if you have a dark sense of humor or if you just need to discover the horrible fate that awaits you.

Baby Head Plant

Filexd under: Arts/Crafts,Books,Crafts,Decor,Lighting,News/Articles — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 5:49 pm

There are times when I see things online that make me want to order one right away and then there are times like this. This Baby Head Plant thing just makes me want to run in the opposite direction screaming. Did you ever see the episode of Friends where Phoebe shows Rachel how she jogs? Well, picture me running away screaming like that. Something about a disembodied baby head with a plant growing out of it’s eye socket just creeps me out. Call me crazy. I love funky and scary stuff, but for some reason when it includes a baby body part that’s just over the line for me. It’s from EarthSeaWarrior on Etsy and sells for $50. I noticed they only had one available, so I thought after this one was sold, at least that would be it. Almost zero chance of me seeing it at someone’s house and having to stupidly run away. I was very wrong. I looked around at their other stuff and found many more. They even have skulls with plants coming out of them. Now that I can get behind. I wish I had seen those first. Then I might have been able to avoid the night of creepy doll heads chasing me and trying to shove a plant in my eye kind of dreams.

Zombie Cupcakes

Filexd under: Books,Food & Candy,kitchen — Tags: , , , , , , — jane @ 3:30 pm

I’m not a cupcake kinda girl. They taste okay, I guess, but in the end they are just tiny cakes. I’m not wild about plain cake. I like fillings. I know that you can get cupcakes with fillings, but I find they are usually too sweet. I’m more of a muffin kinda girl. (yeah, I know) Whenever I see a cupcake it reminds me of some pajamas I had when I was little. They were bright pink and covered in pink, purple, light blue and yellow cupcakes. Clearly I did not pick it out. I hated it, but my Mom loved it. Lately cupcakes have become so popular with stores opening up everywhere selling just cupcakes. Well, I happened across this book called Zombie Cupcakes at the bookstore the other day and I actually (gasp!) bought it. The recipes sounded pretty good and who can resist a good zombie cupcake? I especially like the ones with body parts because for the few minutes it takes to eat it you can actually pretend you are a zombie. I have no real desire to become one, but the idea of biting off someone’s arm or leg does sound attractive sometimes.

Cherise the Niece

Filexd under: Apparel,Books,Story/Poem — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:17 am

Every day we get books into the bookstore. Most of the time they are just your standard novel or a history book that I barely look at long enough to price. Once in a while though, a book will come through that door that catches my attention. Today was one of those days. As you may have guessed I am a huge fan of dark humor. I find most people take themselves way too seriously and need to lighten up a bit. This particular book was written by a man named Jim Benton. I know about this author mainly because Scary Daughter loves his Franny K. Stein books. They are written for kids, but they are wickedly funny. He’s also the creator behind It’s Happy Bunny. So, along comes this book today called Cherise the Niece and it’s by Jim Benton. The cover intrigued me right away and I promptly read it. It’s a short little book, so it doesn’t take long. It’s about a little girl named Cherise who goes to live with various aunts after her parents “mysteriously disappear”. I was laughing from the first page and it has the best last line of any book I’ve ever read. I highly recommend it if you have a murderously funny mind like I do. If you are easily offended, then what the hell are you doing reading my blog?

Oddities

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Books,Collectibles,Decor,Furniture,Halloween Decor,Nature,Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:35 pm

Let’s face it, I am a little weird. Some would even say very weird. I collect unusual things, I dress weird and I decorate my house strangely. My favorite movie quote is, “I, myself, am strange and unusual.” Do you know what movie that’s from? It’s from Beetlejuice. Lydia says this when she is talking to the two ghostly inhabitants of her parent’s new house. I have always thought that it describes me perfectly. My extended family all find me rather odd and have never understood me. Once in a while I come across someone who is like minded and it helps me remember that there are many people out there like me. I have recently discovered a new show and it has quickly became my favorite. I’m actually surprised that it ever got on TV, considering it’s sometimes high ick factor. It’s called Oddities and it’s on the Discovery Science channel. It’s about an unusual antique store in New York called Obscura Antiques and Oddities. It follows the two owners as they deal with buying and selling strange old items. Anything from real skulls to old medical equipment to coffins. If it’s weird and old they probably have it or want to buy it. It’s a fascinating show and I highly recommend it to all of my strange and unusual friends.

Anticraft

Filexd under: Apparel,Art,Arts/Crafts,Books,Crafts,Decor,Fashion,Jewelry — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:16 pm

I am quite the crafty person, as you have probably already guessed. I’ve always got multiple projects going. My big problem and I do mean big is that I am not the cutesy crafter type. I hate the traditional projects you see in books where everything is sweet and pink with delicate ivory lace all over it. I want edgy stuff which luckily has become a little easier to find. Apparently I wasn’t the only frustrated crafter. I was talking to a friend tonight and she told me about this book called Anticraft. She was looking for something different as well and came across it. I borrowed it and after spending a few minutes looking through it I promptly ordered it. The full title is Anticraft: Knitting, Beading and Stitching for the Slightly Sinister. The title alone is cool, but I do like to think that I am more than just slightly sinister. At first glance the cover is not very interesting and may not look like it has anything in it worth looking at. Wrong. This is a perfect example of “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. Wonderful things await you inside. The whole layout of the book is nice and creepy with great photographs and includes knitting, crocheting, sewing and jewelry projects. The book even includes tips and sidebars that will help you embrace your dark nature. The authors also have a website where you can get even more of your Anticraft on. Love, love, love it!

Zombie Felties

Filexd under: Arts/Crafts,Books,Collectibles,Crafts,Halloween Decor,Holidays — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 10:42 pm

Anyone who knows me or has spent any time reading my blog can attest to my zombie obsession. I’m not sure where or when it started. Could be when movies like Shaun of the Dead and Fido started getting released. Before that I had very little interest. I’ve never been a fan of the George Romero type zombie movies. They were just gross and didn’t scare me. If a movie doesn’t make me laugh or scared I’m just not interested. When they finally started having fun with zombies I think I became obsessed. Since some of my readers are aware of my feelings I frequently get attacked by emails with zombie links. A reader tipped me off about a book called “Zombie Felties“. This book will show you how to raise (make) 16 gruesome felt creatures from the undead. They are more cute than gruesome, but who cares? I think I’d make them magnets or something like that since they are pretty small. So, come on, get your zombie on and make a couple of these. It may be too late for stocking stuffers, but they’d make great party gifts! Of course, if you’re not too crafty or just lazy it may just take you until next Christmas to make them anyway.

* Thanks Boutsik for the link!

Scary Christmas Stockings

Filexd under: beverage,Books,Crafts,Jewelry — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 10:29 pm

Are your stockings hung from the chimney with care yet? Or are you a lazy elf like me? I realized as I was sitting in front of the fireplace last night that I hadn’t hung up our stockings yet. I went to get them and realized that I’ve never liked them. We got them years ago as a gift from a friend and they are just a tad too cutesy for me/us. Obviously it wasn’t a close friend or they would have guessed that. Anyway, I started looking online for some new ones that I could order for next year. I found a great seller on Etsy that made some beautiful stockings like the one with the skulls on the right. The one on the left that I fell in love with though, I’m having a hard time finding. It’s an Emily the Strange Christmas stocking, but it doesn’t say that on it, which makes me really like it. It appears to have been discontinued as I have only found one available on ebay. Leave it to me to lust after something I’m going to have a hard time getting. Maybe I’ll wish for them to be in my cutesy stocking from Santa on Christmas morning.

Scary Jane’s Night Before Christmas

Filexd under: Books,Holidays,Misc.,Story/Poem — Tags: , , , , , , , , — jane @ 1:29 pm

We all love Christmas right? And who doesn’t like hearing the Night Before Christmas? I’ve always thought it was a little sappy, so last year I decided to rewrite it. Click here to see Scary Jane’s take on that old classic.
