Creepy Christmas Cross-Stitch

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Arts/Crafts,Decor,Holidays — Tags: , , , , , , — jane @ 5:07 pm

I am a very crafty person. I always have multiple projects going on. My latest obsession is counted cross-stitch. My mother taught me when I was very young, but I just recently rediscovered it. My problem is finding patterns that don’t include cuddly kittens falling out of baskets, beach scenes with children and/or geese etc using pinks and baby blues. 98% of what is available out there is ridiculously cute and a throwback to the 80s. It’s like they designed everything back then and have not done any since. I do know how to make my own patterns, but it can be difficult and time consuming. I don’t really enjoy it. The other day I was looking around for some new patterns even though I already have 3 projects going. I was thinking about doing something Christmasy and came across a little company called Prairie Moon that makes the most unusual patterns I have ever seen. They have some non scary stuff as well, but they are still very original. Check out their site here. They have lots of different patterns.

Goth Christmas Cards

Filexd under: Art,Holidays,Office,stationary — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 5:51 pm

Today is December 1st and that means that it’s that time of year again. Time to start thinking about decorating, baking, wrapping presents and sending Christmas cards. I may be a scary chick, but I still love Christmas and all of it’s traditions. I just like it a little darker and quirky. Most years I make my Christmas cards because I just can’t find any that I like. You can only send out so many Edward Gorey Christmas cards before you get sick of it and want something different. As I was doing my searching this year I came across these Goth Christmas cards from Moonlake Designs. They are all designed by a graphic artist in Wales. They are fantastic! A little Christmas, a little dark and a little humor. Moonlake Designs are sold through Greeting Card Universe and cost $2.79 ea. Yes, I know, a little expensive if you are sending a lot of cards, but totally worth it. You have to cough it up if you want something a little unusual. They will even custom print your message on them. There are quite a few different styles including non-Christmas ones, so look around.

Screaming Mask

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Decor,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 12:16 pm

mask2Technically this piece is actually called Yawning Mask. When I saw it for the first time I didn’t think he was yawning at all. It looks more like a ghost or something screaming. It totally creeped me out and therefore earned a spot on my blog. I actually found this in a Signals catalog, which surprised me. Once in a while they have an odd piece in there, but this one was just too creepy to pass up. Maybe it’s the way it’s photographed that creeps me out. There’s just this emptiness behind it that makes it appear soulless. Is that a word? Anyway, I can’t imagine anyone but someone like me wanting this in their house and I’m not even sure about me. It’s beautifully hand carved in Indonesia from Hibiscus wood. It appears to be very smooth. It states in the description, “Don’t be surprised if you have the sudden urge to yawn.” Really?! So far, I have not yawned even once looking at it. They also describe it as being humorous and serene. I’m not sure about that. It actually reminds me of the mask from Scream to be honest and they aren’t exactly serene movies, though they are humorous. What do you think? Does it scare you or make you yawn?

Panther Sofa

Filexd under: Art,Decor,Furniture,Nature,Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 3:41 pm

Panther SofaPanther SofaWhile I was away many people continued to email me scary things that they would come across. Thanks so much for sticking with me! For those that didn’t… well, they can just suck it!

My favorite thing that was forwarded to me was this Panther Sofa. It was designed by italian Master Craftsman Rodolfo Rocchetti of Tappezzeria Rocchetti. Check out his website for other odd pieces. I absolutely need this sofa! It’s so obnoxious and creepy. The only thing I would maybe change is instead of crushed velvet I’d want regular velvet. Don’t remember what that’s called, but you know what I mean. I do question the placement of the chain however. Are you supposed to sit on it, because having a chain up my butt is not what I am into. Not sure if it is removable or not. It might be handy if you need to detain someone though. For you animal lovers, don’t worry, no real panthers were used in the making of this sofa. I tried to find a price, but no luck. If one of you were to maybe buy this for me I might just be willing to rethink the chain up the butt scenario. Ewww… never mind.

Buddhist Hand

Filexd under: Accessories,Art,Collectibles,Decor,TV/Movies,Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , — jane @ 1:05 pm

Buddhist HandsI have long had a fascination with disembodied hands. They have always delighted me, but creeped me out at the same time. Many other disembodied hands have been covered on my blog such as Hand Soap, Baby Soap Hands, Spooky Wall Hands and Hand Hooks. I have one room in my house that is reserved for my hand fascination and all of my disembodied hands are sent there. I must admit it is a very creepy room, but it makes me happy. I often find my hands in antique and junk stores, but once in a while I find them brand new like this Buddhist Hand from Z Gallerie. They often surprise me with some of their offerings. My only problem would be the price. I’m not sure I want to spend $99.95 on a hand, when I already have two attached to my body and a room full of them. Maybe I’ll get lucky and find it at some garage sale in a few years when the sucker that bought it has decided it’s not hip anymore. Come to think of it, I’m not sure how this love of hands came to be. Maybe it’s the whole obsession I had with Thing from the Addams Family when I was a kid. I still want a live one, so I buy things like this Buddhist Hand hoping that all of the disembodied hands in my house will eventually pull a Toy Story and come to life. I can dream can’t I?

Creepy Wallpapers

Filexd under: Art,Decor,Nature,Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:02 pm

Ms. Ward wallpaperAs I have stated before I am not really a wallpaper fan. I do come across ones that I like now and then, but when I think of trying to remove it one day, when I get tired of it, I come to my senses. There is one thing I’m sure of though, I will never want to put bug wallpaper on my walls. This wallpaper, called Ms. Ward, is actually very cool looking, but I know I would start feeling the creepy crawlies every time I looked at it. I like scary, but not creepy crawlies. This was designed by Katie Deedy of Grow House Grow and part of the Naturalist Collection which features long forgotten women of science. Mary Ward (1827-1869), the inspiration for this pattern, was a renowned entomologist. Each wallpaper design has a neat little story attached to it and all of them are worth checking out. Many different papers are in the series, but the one I find incredibly fascinating is the paper called Aleister. That one is based on Ka Cox and her bizarre run-in with the infamous Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) in Cornwall during the summer of 1938 when she mysteriously passed away. Anything attached to “the wickedest man in the world” is usually worth a read.

Scary Peeps

Filexd under: Art,Food & Candy,TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:01 pm

The PeepsOkay, I admit it. Now and then I take a walk on the normal side and check out Cuteoverload.com. It’s not something I’m proud of, but sometimes a ridiculously cute little bunny or kitty can put a smile on my face. I was in the middle of giving into this need when I was rewarded with something that’s a little more my style. I’ve made no secret of my love for all things Hitchcock, so when I came across this Peep remake of The Birds I was a very happy Scary Jane. I love the imagination of people. I personally hate peeps. I think they taste disgusting, but they sure make for some cool dioramas. This one was done by Jill Goebel of Alexandria, VA and was a semifinalist in the fourth annual Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest.

Spider Table

Filexd under: Art,Decor,Furniture — Tags: , , , , , , , , — jane @ 8:57 pm

Spider TableI am not normally a fan of glass tables. I find them to be too contemporary for my taste and a pain in the ass to clean. Once in a while though, I find a table like this Spider Table that changes my mind and makes me rethink my personal style. I think this table is deliciously creepy. I’ve been obsessed with spiders lately, so I keep searching them out online. I think this might just creep me out too much to have it in my house, but it’s still totally cool. I think it would make me have nightmares about giant spiders chasing me like in those old movies. This particular table was designed by Judy Kensley McKie and is made from steel and glass. Unfortunately it is a one of kind, so don’t get too attached.

Spider Hat

Filexd under: Apparel,Art,Decor,Fashion,Halloween Decor,Nature — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 7:01 pm

Spider HatI, like many women, love hats. I obsessively buy them thinking I will look fabulous in them and then often times don’t have a place to wear them. The fancier the better. Let’s face it though. How many places can you wear an elaborate hat to? I have now found this fantastically creepy Spider Hat that I just have to buy. Unfortunately it’s $145, so it will take a little convincing to get Scary Hubby to agree that I need it. Luckily he loves when I wear a hat, so it shouldn’t be too hard. Plus, all of my hats look really good displayed in our house. So if I never find a day to wear it besides Halloween I can say it’s just part of the house decor.

SCARY_ILLUSIONSI absolutely love pictures like this. You glance at it and it’s one thing. You look closer and it’s something else entirely. So cool and this one’s creepy too!
