I got the link to this Etsy website called Blue Bayer Designs from a reader. All I can say is wow. This is amazing stuff that this guy in New York is creating. His name is actually Blue Bayer and he is a self taught artist. He creates great SteamPunk and Victorian jewelry using anything from watch parts, to bat skulls, to dolls eyes and just found items. I am particularly partial to his eyeball jewelry like the Eyeball Locket and the Blue Eye of Protection Poison Ring. Very unique. He makes all of his items to order, so you can make such requests as what color eye or type of metal he uses. His prices are very reasonable considering how much work and skill goes into making each one. I have a birthday coming up in March if anyone (are you reading Scary Hubby?) is trying to figure out what to get me.

Oh, how I appreciate a macabre sense of humor. So many people out there are so uptight. In the world we live in today you really have to stop once in awhile and smell the dead roses or just get a good laugh. I’m sure I will be bombarded again with emails after people read this post, so let me just say now I am not a serial killer or psychotic. I enjoy life as much as I can and have a great sense of humor considering the things that are going on around us. All that being said, I found this great Slit Throat Choker on Etsy! The artist’s name is Tiana Rutledge and she creates this choker and many other things including Slit Wrist bracelets and Blood Drop earrings. She also makes this fantastic Black Rose ring. I just love her stuff. They are all hand sculpted from flexible polymer clay and very reasonably priced. You can get the entire Bloody Mess set for just $28. Great for Halloween obviously, but I plan on wearing mine year round. I can’t wait until I can wear it to pick up my daughter from school. Those uptight private school moms won’t know what hit them. Shocking them always makes my day.
Now I don’t really like to sew, but this little Witch Boot Pincushion just might help me enjoy it more. I need something to help me enjoy it since I’m always having to fix some piece of clothing or another. I constantly put mending off until someone in my family finally starts yelling loud enough. Maybe they could fix their own clothes. Yeah! That might be asking a little too much from this lazy crowd I call a family. It doesn’t say what it’s made of, but it looks like the boot part is some kind of metal and it’s a good size at 11″ tall. Maybe if it’s heavy enough I can use it as a weapon against my family. Of course I would just use it to threaten, but they don’t know that. If it’s that time of the month anything could happen! As they know from past experience Scary Jane can go ape sh*t at the drop of a pin. However bad, pun was intended.
I absolutely love to crochet. Unfortunately, I never seem to be able to find the time anymore. The bookstore, this blog, my family…let’s face it they all get in the way. I mean is my family really all that important? I don’t really need to feed my daughter right? Or wash her clothes? She could probably handle it herself. She is after all 7! And Scary Hubby, well, if he can’t feed himself by now he’s a lost cause. Crocheting is so much more important when there is a skull to make! Screw my family, I need to put my priorities in order and you should too. If you want to forget about your family and make it go here. It is a free pattern, but you do have to become a member first.
A few weeks ago a reader told me about putting a ring of ghosts around a tree. Years ago I saw this as well, but did not think it was scary enough, so I created my own version. This has become probably the most successful and popular decoration we do in our yard. The problem we ran into was that the tree we had in our front yard was in a corner, so no way to put a ring of anything around it. So we came up with putting a large black plastic cauldron in the center. Inside we put one of those small flaming pot lights. You can also just use dry ice inside or a small fogger. Next we bought six strong garden stakes about 48″ long and six 6-8″ Styrofoam balls. We then put the stakes in the ground and pushed the Styrofoam balls onto the tops of the stakes to look like a head. I personally did not think the white fabric was all that scary, so I found some cheap black cloth at the fabric store and bought six yards. I think it cost $1.99/yd. I cut the fabric into six pieces and then draped each head and stake with it. Not completely over their head like a ghost, but more of hooded cloak. Once I figured out how I wanted the fabric to sit I glued it down to the heads. I then safety pinned the fabric right below the head and then a couple more times all the way down to keep the fabric closed. I pulled up a corner from each one and then the one next to it and tied them together. This makes them look like they are holding hands. When I was done I also added some small cuts to the bottoms of the fabric, so it looked tattered. We then decided this wasn’t scary enough and wanted some sort of creepy music. We ended up downloading some scary sounding monk chanting onto a CD. We hid a CD player in the bushes, turned on the flaming cauldron and ta da creepy Devil Worshipers. Later we decided to spray paint the Styrofoam balls black, which made it look even scarier. Every year we pull this out and it is by far the one thing we get the most comments on. I even get a little chill when I walk by and hear the moaning chanting monks. Thanks Beautiful Kind for reminding me of this project.
Years ago I visited a restaurant in New York called the Jekyll & Hyde Club. I go back everytime I’m there. It’s my fav. If you haven’t been there it’s a theme restaurant, but one for the scary minded like myself. It’s Halloween year round, it’s a total tourist trap and I love it!. The food is okay, but you don’t go for the food. You go for the ambiance. It’s decorated like a haunted house with a different theme for each of the 4 floors. Throughout the day they do live shows on the main floor and it’s a riot. Well, anyway one time I was there I sat near the werewolf head and it taunted me throughout our meal. I absolutely loved this effect and have desperately tried to recreate it for the store without success. The problem is you have to have someone on the other side of the wall that can see who is in front of the head at all times. I can’t hire someone just for that! I’m still waiting for an animatronic one that will at least say some different things, but so far nothing. I found this website where you can build your own Werewolf Head that doesn’t talk pictured bottom right. The directions are so involved though. You would need to be an artist to pull this off or you could buy the Werewolf pictured below left and be done with it. It’s expensive, but I know I’d screw it up if I tried to make one.
