Horror at the Oscars

Filexd under: News/Articles, TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , — jane @ 12:48 pm

I finally got around to watching the rest of the Oscars. I was out that night and only caught the big awards at the end. I had heard that there was finally a tribute to horror movies and I was anxious to see it. Now that I have seen it I have some complaints. First off why were Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart presenting this? I mean, really, are they today’s only answer to modern horror movies? I liked the movies, but they are pretty tame in the horror department. Why not have the queen of scream, Jamie Leigh Curtis or Mr. Nightmare himself Robert Englund?  Heck, why not Bruce Campbell? I know they wanted to pull in the viewers by getting the Twilight kids, but use them for something else. There were much better choices for this presentation. My other big beef with this was the opening statement that the Oscars had not honored a horror movie since The Exorcist, 37 years ago. Really? What about the numerous awards that have been given out since to horror movies for visual effects, sound, makeup, costumes etc. Do these not count? Tell that to the winners. So, if these don’t count, what about all of the awards given to Silence of the Lambs? Best actor, actress, picture, director, screenplay were all awarded to that which is much more than what was awarded to The Exorcist. They only received awards for sound and screenplay. I guess you could argue that Silence of the Lambs was not a full on horror film, but the Academy included it in the montage, so that argument goes out the window. Putting all of that aside, I was thrilled to see the Academy giving horror movies their due. You can’t deny that the general public loves horror movies and it was about time that they paid homage to that.

Psych: Mr. Yin Presents…

Filexd under: TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , — jane @ 8:58 pm

I have pushed one of my favorite shows on here before and I’m going to do it again. I love Psych because it is incredibly creative and it always keeps me guessing. Plus, I can watch it with my 7 year old. Once in awhile they do one of their tribute episodes. Wednesday’s episode was a tribute to Hitchcock that just thrilled me to pieces. They creatively tied together such movies as Psycho, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Rear Window and North By Northwest in a continuation of a serial killer storyline featuring Ally Sheedy which unfortunately goes unsolved by the end of the episode. The writers of this show obviously have a fondness for horror and mystery movies and repeatedly incorporate them into the show. If you haven’t ever watched this show you need to check it out and give it a chance.

Bloody Hands Water Bottle

Filexd under: Bar, kitchen — Tags: , , , , , , — jane @ 5:49 pm

Bloody Water BottleAs usual a trip over to the Hot Topic website rewards me with a cool new find. They have a Bloody Hands Water Bottle that is just too cool. Got me thinking though. Why bother buying one for $7.99 when you can make your own? How many of us have been left with bloody hands after a night of fun? Why not find one of your own water bottles you probably have lying around and wipe those bloody hands on it. Let it dry and ta da! You have your very own Bloody Water Bottle personalized just for you. Every time you take a sip you’ll be reminded of that fun and crazy night. If you find yourself with bloody hands often, why not make some for your family and friends for Christmas? Just don’t bother making me one because I have plenty of my own.

Skull Radio

Filexd under: Accessories, Decor, Misc., Music — Tags: , , , , — jane @ 10:14 pm

Skull RadioIf you don’t know by now, I love skulls. I love anything with skulls on it, but apparently even I have my limits. I came across this Skull Radio and thought to myself that some things are just better left without a skull. This little plastic radio has a sound-activated skull that wags his jaw along to your favorite station and has light-up eyes. According to the website the push-button settings are “fun to use”. Really? I sincerely doubt that. I’ve never come across push-buttons that are anything more than functional. I don’t know. This just looks cheap and stupid to me. Not everything requires a skull perched on top of it. As a joke gift maybe, but that’s about it. Might explain why it’s marked down to $8.98 from $19.95. If you love it and can’t live without it wait a little longer and I’m sure the price will go down even more.

Never Moon A Werewolf

Filexd under: Apparel, Travel — Tags: , , , , — jane @ 5:45 pm

Never Moon A Werewolf T-ShirtToday’s T-Shirt Tuesday are words to live by. This Never Moon A Werewolf t-shirt basically points out that mooning a werewolf would not be a good idea. I mean everyone knows that a full moon brings out the werewolf in an infected person. Now of course I realize that the legend refers to the actual moon in the sky, but who knows? Do you really want to chance that just for a gag? This reminds me of something that happened to us last year. We were in England and we actually had a guy moon us while we sat and ate dinner on a patio. Two days later it happened again while we were walking on the beach and a week later it actually happened again. Crazy, right? Maybe they thought one of us was a werewolf and they were trying to catch us. We might have been, but quite a chance to take, don’t you think? Later we found out from a friend who lives there that it’s quite common to get mooned in England. Especially on the coast during festivals which is where we were. Too bad I wasn’t wearing this t-shirt then. Maybe they would have thought twice before they did it and we, including my 7 year old daughter, wouldn’t have been subjected to some random guy’s hairy ass. Just a thought.

Spider Mouse

Filexd under: Office, Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 3:12 pm

Spider MouseHere’s the scary product of the week. This Spider Mouse would probably be too scary for me to use. I would be terrified that the thing would come back to life and escape. I’m assuming they are dead, but I can’t read Japanese so who knows. Can you imagine your co-workers seeing that on your desk? You can also get it with some other bugs, but I think the spider is the scariest. The spiders or insects are sealed inside a pocket of clear gel to preserve them and then some internal LED lights to light them up and make them even more scary. They apparently sell for only 1,480 yen  which is about $15. Pretty cheap, but I’m sure shipping from Japan would be pretty high. In case you are reading this Scary Hubby I DO NOT want one of these for my birthday.

Cirque Du Freak

Filexd under: TV/Movies — Tags: , , , , , — jane @ 7:07 pm

Cirque Du FreakFinally got to see Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant last night. We had meant to see it when it came out, but with a small child in the house it can sometimes be hard to get away. It didn’t help that the movie pretty much disappeared after just a couple of weeks. I had read the bad reviews, but I didn’t care. It looked like the perfect movie for me. I went into it with very low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it and the more I think about it I like it even more. I think this movie definitely suffered from much to long of a title. Movies with really long titles don’t usually do as well at the movies. With some exceptions I’m sure. The movie was based on the first book of a series, which I have not read. I plan to now. I liked the feel of the movie right away. It had a sense of humor, but still delivered some scary scenes and even a rather brutal scene. The town that the movie was set in was obviously supposed to be very vanilla and I like the fact that everyone wore pastel colors all of the time. Very “I shop at JCrew” kind of look. I just think they should have played that up a little more because I’m not sure it came across enough. Lots of great stars, too. It was also refreshing to see vampires portrayed in a more ugly way instead of all brooding and sparkly. Not all vampires are handsome. You can tell that they meant this to be the first of many, but unfortunately it did not do well, so I’m thinking it’s not in the cards. Too bad. It’s a world that transferred really well to film. Scary Hubby and I always tend to like the movies/TV shows that no one else does.  I’m looking forward to exploring it more in the books, though.

Skull Lamp Shade Cover

Filexd under: Decor, Lighting — Tags: , , , , , , , — jane @ 6:17 pm

Skull Lamp Shade CoverWhen I was in college long ago I was always looking for ways to scare up my dorm room, much to my roommate’s dismay. I’m afraid I was somewhat gloomy in my decor choices which did not make for a fast friendship with the cheerleader I shared a room with. It seems I was quite difficult back then. Over time we came to accept one another’s differences and became friends and have remained so. One thing I did that drove her completely batty was that I was always putting black filmy scarves over my lamp shades to make it gloomier in the room. She of course would complain that she couldn’t see when she came in and take them off. If I had had some of these creepy cool Skull Lamp Shade Covers back in those days I would have been so happy and she would have been even more mad. She didn’t take kindly to my skull collection either. I guess I was always trying to piss her off in those days.

Badass Chair

Filexd under: Art, Decor, Furniture, Weird Stuff — Tags: , , , , , , — jane @ 6:09 pm

I came across this very badass chair called The Outlaw the other day. It was designed by Ted Nemeth. The chair “…is a classic Victorian chair that’s hand carved from solid mahogany the painted satin black and embossed with jewels, tooled leather and working speakers in the footstool.” Not sure where to start. There are just so many things to say about this chair. As a former interior designer I still get very excited about furniture. I also get very irritated when someone says they painted solid mahogany. That’s neither here nor there though. Just an aside really. This chair has the words F*** O** tooled in on the seat with a black skull sitting at the top of the back. It certainly is a badass chair and I think only badass people should own it. It’s very cool, but might just be a little too scary for my house. Or should I say weird. The thing that bugs me the most is the speakers in the footstool. Really? Is that necessary? How do they attach to your stereo? Will you have cords running from it or is it wireless? Why on the footstool anyway? Your feet will be pumping with the music. Wouldn’t that affect the sound? I don’t know. Strange choice if you ask me, which no one did or I would have given them an earful!Outlaw ChairOutlaw Chair 2
